Canyoning

The word canyoning is English and means “gorge crossing”. It describes a complex activity that combines hiking, climbing, downhill, crossing the river and swimming. When waterfalls occur, it also includes jumps from height to water. According to the dictionary, “a canyon is a narrow, deep and precipitous ravine formed between two mountains or hills due to the continuous erosion of the soil by the waters of the rapids.”

In Greece, gorge crossing is a relatively new activity, but it is growing rapidly, winning many fans and fanatics.

Conditions for gorge crossing
> It is always done by small teams led by experienced drivers and after proper planning.
> The individuals involved must be physically fit depending on the degree of difficulty, know some basic techniques of crashing and know how to swim.

How to cross the gorge
> It starts at the entrance to the gorge, which is usually the highest point.
> The exit is at the lowest point of the gorge, following the flow of the river.
> Many times we need to walk in the river and even swim. There are physical obstacles such as, for example, small waterfalls, which are descended by means of mountaineering equipment and ropes.

How long does it take
This depends on:
> The length of the gorge
> Its features and difficulties
> The weather conditions
> The number of people (more people, more time)

Season: April to October
